*01* NC State announces VCIT position and creation of the Office of Information Technology
NC State is moving forward with its plans to create an enterprise-level IT organization. This reorganization of information technology functions was listed as the first priority among the university’s initiatives for UNC System President Erskine Bowles’ President's Advisory Committee on Efficiency and Effectiveness (PACE).
On August 31, 2007, Chancellor Oblinger announced that he will formally recommend to the Board of Governors the creation of the position of vice chancellor of information technology (VCIT) for NC State. He has appointed a nominating committee to begin a national search, and the search firm of Russell Reynolds Associates has been hired to assist the process. The new VCIT will be the university's chief information officer (CIO).
As part of the transition plan, Resource Management and Information Systems (RMIS) and the Information Technology Division (ITD) are working together to create a new unified IT organization called the Office of Information Technology, or OIT. The consolidation will take effect on November 1, 2007. The same broad range of IT services and resources that NC State receives from RMIS and ITD will continue to be provided by the OIT throughout the transition.
For more information about the search for the new VCIT, see http://www.ncsu.edu/admin-searches/cio/

*03* Password change and UIA tools save time and aggravation
Have you ever forgotten an important password and had to go through a hassle to get it reset? Under the new University Password Standard procedures, everyone at NC State will need to change their Unity passwords at least once a year to access secure services such as the new MyPack Portal for financial, human resources, and student information. The Unity Password Change Tool makes it easy for you to change your Unity password online: https://sysnews.ncsu.edu/passwd/
The IT Security team strongly recommends that you also use the User Identification and Authentication (UIA) tool. The UIA lets you create security questions and answers, so that if you forget your password, you can simply call the NC State Help Desk to have your password reset: https://www.acs.ncsu.edu/scripts/authentication/UIA_Main.pl
*04* TLTR meets this Thursday - "Visualizing Information"
The Teaching. Learning & Technology Roundtable (TLTR), invites NC State faculty, staff and students to the first TLTR session of the 20007-08 academic year. Join in a discussion with some talented NC State researchers on how data can be translated into and interpreted as visual image: "Visualizing Information: Understanding Without Numbers or Words (or, Who is Edward Tufte Anyway? & Other Visualization Matters)":
*Thursday, Sept 20, 3:30-5 p.m., Faculty Senate Chambers, 2nd floor Erdahl-Cloyd wing, DH Hill Library.
For more information about the TLTR, see http://www.ncsu.edu/tltr/
*05* DELTA holds town hall meetings on LMS, Sept. 27 and Oct. 5
Would you like more information about Blackboard Vista, the commercial Learning Management System (LMS) supported by DELTA at NC State? DELTA invites instructors and interested support staff and students to participate in one of the forums they are hosting this fall. They will discuss factors that contributed to the problems encountered during spring 2007; what DELTA has specifically done or will need to do to address these factors; and strategic goals/direction for LMSs at NC State. The forums will be held:
*Thursday, Sept. 27, 1 – 3 p.m. Talley Student Center Walnut Room
*Friday, Oct. 5, 1 – 3 p.m. Talley Student Center South Gallery
*06* New calendaring/email team invites campus to open meetings in October
Do you have questions or concerns about NC State's calendaring and email services? As announced in August, the calendaring and e-mail services of RMIS and ITD have been integrated and now operate under Communication Technologies (ComTech). To ensure an open dialog with campus calendaring and email users, the new calendar/email team invites NC State faculty, staff and students to participate in one of several town hall meetings during the month of October. The town hall meetings will be held:
* Wednesday, Oct. 3, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Witherspoon Student Center, room 126
* Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Centennial Campus, Monteith Engineering Research Center (formerly EGRC), room 136
* Thursday, Oct. 11, 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., Withers Hall, room 232A
There will be a brief overview of the calendar/e-mail team's charge and the work of the team to date, as well as a discussion of future plans. The team will continue to provide existing calendaring and email services to the campus through the fall '07 and spring '08 semesters.
