- 01- Forum to discuss data security, classification and management issues: August 9

Data security, classification and management issues affect us all - from students sharing passwords, to faculty with confidential student data on their personal laptops, to university Data Stewards concerned about "identity theft" and the security of  university records. To help educate the campus community about these issues, the University IT Committee's second informal open meeting will be on the topic of data security and the new university data classification and data management Regulations now in the process of approval. All are invited to this informative and important meeting: August 9, 1:30-3, Faculty Senate Chambers, DH Hill Library.

For more information about the University IT Committee and scheduled meetings, see www.ncsu.edu/it/uitc/

-02-Web Page Accessibility Regulation Q and A sessions:  August 31 and September 6

To help campus web developers meet the January 2007 web page accessibility deadline, ITD's Accessibility Services has scheduled two more sessions to discuss the requirements of the university's Web Page Accessibility Regulation (http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/campus_environ/non-discrimination/REG04.25.5.php). The meetings will be held in ITTC Lab A, DH Hill Library on Thursday August 31, 1:30-2:30 p.m. and Wednesday, September 6, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Both sessions will include information about training, online tutorials, software tools and consulting services available to facilitate compliance with the new Regulation. The NC State Web Page Accessibility Regulation covers administrative, departmental and course web pages. It requires that these web resources be designed to comply with standards that enable people with disabilities to access web-based content and services. For more information, contact Saroj Primlani, saroj_primlani@ncsu.edu, 513-4087, or visit www.ncsu.edu/it/access/webreg.php.

-03- Time to sign up for the User Identification and Authentication service

Ever forget your password? In the past, most faculty and staff have had to visit a Help Desk in person and provide positive identification if they needed to have their computing account password reset. With the new User Identification and Authentication (UIA) system, you can  now create your own password security questions and answers in advance, and you can use them to identify yourself over the phone to Help Desk staff. Then, if you  forget your password, it can be reset by simply calling the NC State Help Desk. To take advantage of this convenience and help improve the efficiency and security of campus IT, please sign up for the UIA service today: http://www.acs.ncsu.edu/uia.

-04-Symantec Antivirus and other software licensed for campus and home computers

The site license for Symantec Antivirus, the most widely-used antivirus software on campus, was renewed in June for another two years. University Policy requires the use of an approved antivirus product for all Windows and Macintosh computers connected to the NC State network. The Symantec Antivirus agreement continues to allow all faculty, staff and students to use this highly-rated software to protect their home as well as campus computers. The software is available for both the Windows and Macintosh platforms and can be downloaded free of charge from www.ncsu.edu/antivirus.

Other contracts recently renewed include ESRI (makers of ArcInfo, ArcGIS Desktop, and many others) and Wolfram Research (Mathematica).  Both contracts allow use by all faculty, staff and students on both university
and home computers.  For more information about ESRI products, Mathematica, Symantec Antivirus or any other software maintained by  ITD, visit the Software@NC State website at www.ncsu.edu/it/essentials/software_ncstate/.
