The primary initial goal of the project is to
- Provide intervention for undergraduate students entering NC State who do not have a base level understanding of the use of technology that would meet faculty members' rising expectations.
As technology is increasingly used in and out of the classroom, possession of basic IT skills and an understanding of the computing environment at NC State significantly enhances a student's chance for academic success.
To accomplish this goal we will
- Gather information from faculty and grad students who teach freshmen to determine
- What technologies are being used?
- What expectations exist for incoming students?
- Assess students' skill level prior to their arrival
- Provide training opportunities before and as they begin classes at NC State
- Reassess students to determine whether intervention was successful
An "ideal ultimate" goal would be to implement structures at NC State that enable our students to become fluent with information technology, as defined by the 1999 National Research Council's report Being Fluent with Information Technology.
